On January 29, 1817 – 200 years ago – a young Englishman bought the castle of Seraing, the former summer residence of the prince-bishops of Liège, in order to manufacture steam engines. In doing so, John Cockerill gave impetus to a real industrial revolution in a valley which, thanks to the will of great captains of industry and the know-how of its population, was to carry the reputation of the Liege region throughout the world.
